Was Israel's reported strike in Sudan an exercise in propaganda?

Shhhhh, Israel has done it again. On the eve of the end of prime minister Ehud Olmert's term, in what appeared like a suspicious coincidence, we heard the report from distant America about another covert, impressive Israeli operation. This time it was carried out by planes or unmanned aerial vehicles. Israel had struck again. The imagination-sparking report fit in well with Olmert's end-of-term celebrations. Everyone, including Olmert himself, spread broad hints about Israel's secret operations during his term, as a sign of his prowess in office. The sweet memories of taking over the boat Karine A at sea, assassinating Imad Mugniyeh (according to foreign sources, of course) and the mysterious shelling in Syria have barely faded. And suddenly we have Sudan. A supply convoy, no less, with dozens of trucks carrying arms from Iran, no less, including a boat at sea, no less, making their way to Gaza were bombed, and several dozen people were killed.

Nobody knows for sure what was bombed, how much and why. Sudan, after all, is far away. But we can rely on our fine young men in the Mossad and air force to know what they're doing. We were right, it worked again. All our forces returned safely, leaving only dust and ashes from the dangerous convoy. The muttering of Sudan's government about innocent fishing boats that were bombed is irrelevant. Fishermen or terrorists, a la guerre comme a la guerre. The military commentators and the entire Israeli nation in their footsteps were beside themselves with admiration. The Israeli James Bond is still here. An army that hasn't fought against another army for decades finds its glory in such operations. So does the political leadership. What did Olmert say with a wink after the Sudan incident? "There is no place where Israel cannot operate." Hooray. With a quarter of that imagination and daring we could have achieved peace already, but let's not go into such trivia. Due to the character of the operation in Sudan we were unfortunately spared the regular spectacle: the first sergeant spreading a military blanket, on which soldiers lay out the loot - rows and rows of frightening guns. Countless reporters and photographers from Israel and abroad are invited, while officers and commentators recite - from a handed-down page - praises of the great achievement, descriptions of the dangerous weapons captured, and details of the "dangerous and complicated" operation. They also show the public, which is ignorant in these matters, that the war on terror is in full swing and its achievements are enormous. They then reiterate the enormity of the danger facing us. Remember their reports of Hamas getting new arms and equipment before Operation Cast Lead? How they frightened us before the operation, which resembled at best a military maneuver - with no combatant army or real weapons facing us. The end is known: There was no war and no equipment except the primitive Qassams and Grads. This is how the propaganda machine intensifies the danger and enhances the achievement. Thus it brainwashes everyone about the Israel Defense Forces' great, never-ending feats. Now that the Sudan operation is behind us, let's remember its predecessor, Operation Noah's Ark. The story of seizing Karine A could have been taken from an action movie. We were told of Squadron 13 combatants descending from helicopters, rubber boats in the water and intelligence aircraft, photographs and refuelling in the sky. An F-15 Eagle fighter secured the operation and in a Boeing 707 sat - just imagine - the chief of staff and commanders of the air force and navy. The operation was sealed by the inevitable scene of the Israeli flag hoisted on the boat, which was towed to Eilat. There its loot was displayed - 50 tons of outdated guns and mortars. It was seen, of course, as one of the IDF's greatest achievements in the past decade. Some of these operations may be significant to security, others are no more than propaganda and scaremongering exercises for internal and external needs. The new government, with two Sayeret Matkal elite commando unit graduates in its leadership, raises fears that we have more escapades in store. These operations may also fail from time to time, and their contribution and price will be impossible to measure. Meanwhile, let's raise a toast to the glorious bombers who returned from Sudan.

Iran to complete hospital that Israel started building in Mauritania

Just a few weeks after the Israeli ambassador to Mauritania was ordered to leave the country, with encouragement from Iran, the regime in Tehran is attempting to take control of a hospital for cancer research and treatment in the Mauritanian capital, which has symbolized relations between Jerusalem and Nouakchott. Iran's Foreign Minister, Manouchehr Mottaki, visited Mauritania on Wednesday, marking the first such visit since 1982. Although the visit lasted only six hours it included a stop at the hospital known by locals as "the Israeli hospital." The hospital project has been stalled since Mauritania severed relations with Israel earlier this month. There are reports that Iran paid the Mauritania government about $10 million to kick out the Israeli ambassador.

During his visit to the hospital, Mottaki promised that Iran will "replace" Israel and equip the hospital as needed. Mottaki praised the government of Mauritania for suspending relations with Israel, saying "Our enemies in the Middle East have reached the end of the road." The hospital was initiated in 2000 by the Ministry of Health, which envisioned the establishment of an advanced center for cancer research and treatment in Mauritania. The project has gone through ups and downs and was stalled at various stages due to hesitation on the part of the Nouakchott government. About nine months ago the project was kicked into high gear, following requests by the local government, and the pace of work was stepped up. An official inauguration ceremony was to have taken place within the next two months. Israel was to have sent over advanced medical equipment, including state-of-the-art X-ray machines, and a team of doctors was planning to travel to Mauritania to train local physicians in the treatment of cancer patients. Several million shekels were spent on the project, which was funded partly by the Israeli government and partly by the American Jewish Committee. "The aim was to build a medical center that would be a gift from the Jewish people to the Mauritanian people," a source involved with the project said. "What happened there with the Iranians is very regretful. There's no doubt that the Mauritanians acted out of spite."

Israeli drones reportedly attacked Sudan convoys

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Israel used unmanned drones to attack Iranian convoys in Sudan on their way to smuggle arms into Gaza, a British newspaper reported.
The long-range missiles being smuggled to Hamas in two convoys at the end of January and in the first week of February had the range to strike Tel Aviv and Israel's nuclear reactor at Dimona, according to the report in the Sunday Times.
At least 50 smugglers were killed in the attacks, the Sunday Times reported.

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Israel used unmanned drones to attack Iranian convoys in Sudan on their way to smuggle arms into Gaza, a British newspaper reported.
The long-range missiles being smuggled to Hamas in two convoys at the end of January and in the first week of February had the range to strike Tel Aviv and Israel's nuclear reactor at Dimona, according to the report in the Sunday Times.
At least 50 smugglers were killed in the attacks, the Sunday Times reported.

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- Hours after an international court issued a warrant for his arrest, Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir kicked humanitarian aid groups out of his country. Nevertheless, Jewish activists who backed the indictment are standing behind their decision.
The world community cannot allow Bashir's crimes and threats to deter the appropriate legal entities from taking action, said the director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, Rabbi David Saperstein.
Bashir's reaction reaffirms "the legitimacy of the indictment” by the International Criminal Court, said Saperstein, who noted that Bashir has been obstructing the provision of humanitarian aid for years, and that the indictment and arrest warrant should turn up the pressure on the Sudanese leader.
The warrant charges Bashir with five counts of crimes against humanity -- murder, extermination, forcible transfer, torture and rape -- in the Darfur region of Sudan. It also includes two counts of war crimes -- intentionally directing an attacks against a civilian population and pillaging.
After a nearly six-year campaign of systematic rape, expulsion and murder against the citizens of Darfur by the government-backed Janjaweed militia, hundreds of thousands have died and more than 2.5 million have fled their homes and live in refugee camps in the region or in the neighboring countries of Chad and the Central African Republic.
Following the arrest warrant, the Sudanese government revoked the licenses of 13 international humanitarian organizations and evicted them from Sudan on March 4. The government also closed down three domestic relief agencies.
According to the Save Darfur Coalition, the expelled organizations account for at least half of the humanitarian operations in Darfur, and without them, some 1.1 million people will be without food aid, 1.5 million will not have medical care and more than a million will be left without safe drinking water.
“I'm sad" about the situation, but "if criminal law is going to mean anything, we have to call it what it is,” said Rabbi Steve Gutow, executive director of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, which earlier this month passed a resolution supporting the possible use of military force in Darfur.
Gutow said supporters of the indictment anticipated the consequences, but the hope is that the ICC action will have an impact “not today but tomorrow.” He said the arrest warrant increased the likelihood that others in the Sudanese leadership, upset by the international opprobrium, would push out Bashir and set up a more conciliatory government.
Another Jewish group active on the Darfur issue, the American Jewish World Service, refused to connect the two recent events. AJWS spokesman Joshua Berkman said his organization “does not believe there is any legitimate link” between the arrest warrant and the ejection of aid groups.
“The ICC is an independent court and has nothing to do with humanitarian relief work,” he said.
Berkman said AJWS believes the international community is correct in rejecting the idea that humanitarian aid for 4 million people could be used as a “bargaining chip” in any way, and added that it was time for the United States to take the lead in pushing to resolve the conflict.
Saperstein agreed, saying that his group was pushing for the White House to name a special envoy to work on the issue.
After a meeting with President Obama last month, actor George Clooney said he was told there would be an envoy appointed, but the White House has not announced it.
In a letter last week signed by AJWS, the Religious Action Center and the JCPA, more than 50 members of the Save Darfur Coalition urged Obama to condemn publicly Bashir's actions and “insist that he restore access to life-saving humanitarian aid.”
While the effects of the expulsion of aid groups on Darfurians is not yet known, Jewish leaders said that Bashir's actions immediately caught the attention of the wider American Jewish community, which has been at the forefront of efforts to bring the world's focus to the Darfur genocide.
The Reform movement sent out an action alert last week to its congregations urging members to call their members of Congress about Darfur, and "judging from the response, people are re-engaged on this issue," Saperstein said.
He said the indictment and expulsion of aid groups "has galvanized people again."

Ugly racism in Ashkelon: R., a real estate agent from Ashkelon, arrived at a building in one of the southern city's neighborhoods recently with a couple of new immigrants, and was shocked to discover that the place has a policy of not selling apartments to Ethiopians.
A thorough investigation revealed that this policy is shared by all of the building's tenants, and perhaps the residents of additional buildings in the area as well – most of them of Russian descent.

In a conversation the real estate agent had with A., the owner of one of the building's apartments, A. asked about the potential buyers. When he heard that they were Ethiopian immigrants, he replied, "Out of the question… This is unacceptable in my apartment.
"Excuse me, but there are no Ethiopians in this area at all, and there won't be any. This is our policy. I have no problem with them living somewhere else… Anyone can come, but not Ethiopians. This is how it is in the entire building, at least I hope it is, in order to preserve the apartment's value and the building's value."
In another conversation, A. repeated his stance, adding, "We’ve kept this rule of not selling to Ethiopians for 16 years. I can't speak for the entire house, but this is how I feel… It immediately drops the apartment's value… Although I'll be leaving the building, their apartments drop 30% in value… I'm no expert in the details, but the price goes down if Ethiopians come.
"I don’t care who lives here, I'm not racist. But when I leave the building where I have lived for the past 16 years, the rest of the tenants will look at me as a traitor because I sold to Ethiopians. I don’t want to ruin my relations with my friends."
A. went on to explain, "It just happened that there are no Ethiopians in the houses around us. A quarter of the apartments have been sold in our building. There are no Ethiopians at all, and almost everyone is Russian.... It's not a written rule, but there is such a decision that it drops the apartment's value.
"This isn't a racist issue, this is reality, which proves that it drops the apartments' prices. Why? That question should be directed to those who don’t want to pay. It's not my call, it's the fact on the ground. People call me at the apartment and they almost always ask, 'Do you have Ethiopians in the building?' It matters to some people, that's all."
The apartment was eventually sold to a couple of new immigrants from Russia.

Another resident in the building, who only identified herself as Irena, also clarified that "we have no Ethiopians in this building". Pointing at the eastern end of the neighborhood, she added, "There are Ethiopians down there. We don’t have any. I don’t know who I'll sell my house to, but I won't sell it to Ethiopians. It's our building, we're all friends here, we grew up together, and each person wants to live next to the people he knows."

"Unfortunately, we have encountered this phenomenon many times, and each time I was shocked because one expects such phenomena to disappear in this era. But each time you hear about it you think it's a one-time incident. Unfortunately, this phenomenon exists, and it's good that it has been exposed in its full ugliness, because raising this issue will only help fight such ugly phenomenon," he noted.
Former Council Member Shlomo Blai, head of the Ethiopian community in Ashkelon, was shocked to hear about the story. He said he had heard about the phenomenon in the distant past, "but I couldn’t believe such things still exist in Ashkelon. It's shocking, outrageous, and simply awful. I talk about it and I'm all shaking with anger.

"It's unthinkable that such things happen in 2009. Each time I hear about such racist things I ask myself what sin have we committed. Is a person's skin color enough to cause people to treat other people like this? They are not criminals or bad people, but rather people like you and me. I won't keep silent over this issue."

Darfur still on the brain at JCPA gathering

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- The economic crisis and other issues may have far surpassed it in the headlines, but the Jewish community still cares about the crisis in Darfur.
That was evident this week in Washington as the Jewish Council for Public Affairs passed a resolution at its annual plenum endorsing the option of U.S. military force in Sudan.
“I think it's a statement about this community's steadfastness,” said JCPA's executive director, Rabbi Steve Gutow, noting that even though local Jewish communities have spent much time and effort on Darfur in the past few years, great concern remains about the genocide in the region.
The plenum serves as an annual barometer of where the organized Jewish community stands on a host of issues. Representatives of JCPA's member organizations -- the synagogue movements, several national groups and more than 100 local communities across North America -- come together for the event.
The resolution, in addition to calling for intensified diplomatic efforts and the appointment of a senior full-time envoy to the Sudan, states that the U.S. government should "not exclude the option of military means if feasible, and in coalition with other countries, to protect the innocent civilians in Darfur and to ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid." It passed overwhelmingly after an effort to strike the paragraph on the military option garnered little support.
Another resolution that achieved wide backing of public-policy advocates from more than 100 community relations councils and 14 national organizations encouraged local communities to pursue Jewish-Muslim dialogue on common concerns such as civil liberties issues and fighting racism and prejudice.
“Differences remain" among the two communities, the document says, but "they should not necessarily preclude efforts to dialogue."
Its advocates say the resolution will provide “guidance” to local communities. Jack Moline, a Conservative rabbi from Alexandria, Va., who helped craft the statement, says it simply says that “we should be treating Muslims like any other partner in dialogue.”
Some critics argued that the resolution did not provide enough guidance on controversial issues.Holder: No clash between ideals, security
U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder received a standing ovation before he started speaking on Monday morning.
“This is definitely my kind of audience,” he said in response.
The main theme of Holder's 15-minute talk was that the conflict between fighting terrorism and protecting “our tradition of civil liberties” is not a “zero-sum battle.” Such an idea is not only “misguided,” he said, but “has done us more harm than good.”
After the speech Holder held an hourlong, off-the-record meeting with about a dozen top JCPA leaders on legal topics from torture to church-state issues.
"It was a deep, substantive discussion," said JCPA Washington director Hadar Susskind, adding that the attorney general saw the meeting as the "first step in building an open and engaged relationship with the Jewish community."How big a tent?The Jewish Council for Public Affairs Plenum's Sunday discussion of "How Big a Tent for Pro-Israel Advocacy?" marked the debut of a new face inside the tent.
J Street, the 10-month-old group that has marketed itself as an alternative to what it believes are the more hawkish views of mainstream Jewish organizations, for the first time was invited to participate in a conference held by an established group.The invitation sparked a spirited but civi, debate about how the Jewish community should discuss Israel.
Jeremy Ben-Ami, J Street's executive director, argued that the community should shun useless labels such as "pro-Israel" and instead have a vibrant discussion about what is best for the Jewish state -- saying that "orthodoxy" of opinion on Israel was "dangerous" and "sowing the seeds of destruction" for the Jewish community.
The deputy national director of the Anti-Defamation League, Kenneth Jacobson, responded that there was plenty of debate about Israel in the American Jewish community, but it happened in places such as the JCPA plenum and the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations.
The community has thought about the best way to be effective and have influence, Jacobson said, and the answer was to have a "consensus position" when it goes to Congress -- an approach that has achieved “unbelievable success.”
There's a "difference between the right to think as an individual and the responsibility of the community to present advocacy in a way that will have an impact,” the ADL official said.
Meanwhile, the third member of the panel, Endowment for Middle East Truth founder and director Sarah Stern, asserted that there was a "tremendous distinction between lobbying from the left and right” because those on the left were “encouraging risks.” Jacobson rejected that notion.
Stern and Jacobson argued that those who want to participate in the community's debate about the Jewish state should at least be grounded in some minimal amount of education about Israel and the Jewish world.
Ben-Ami, though, said the community can only benefit from bringing more people into the discussion, saying that young Jews are turned off when they are given just one opinion on the conflict but will be engaged by more free-flowing debate.
The crowd of about 75 seemed to include supporters of both viewpoints, and Ben-Ami was pleased afterward by the debate his appearance had fostered.
"This is the kind of discussion we need to have," he said. "If college students saw this, they'd be thrilled."

The plenum serves as an annual barometer of where the organized Jewish community stands on a host of issues. Representatives of JCPA's member organizations -- the synagogue movements, several national groups and more than 100 local communities across North America -- come together for the event.
The resolution, in addition to calling for intensified diplomatic efforts and the appointment of a senior full-time envoy to the Sudan, states that the U.S. government should "not exclude the option of military means if feasible, and in coalition with other countries, to protect the innocent civilians in Darfur and to ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid." It passed overwhelmingly after an effort to strike the paragraph on the military option garnered little support.
Another resolution that achieved wide backing of public-policy advocates from more than 100 community relations councils and 14 national organizations encouraged local communities to pursue Jewish-Muslim dialogue on common concerns such as civil liberties issues and fighting racism and prejudice.
“Differences remain" among the two communities, the document says, but "they should not necessarily preclude efforts to dialogue."
Its advocates say the resolution will provide “guidance” to local communities. Jack Moline, a Conservative rabbi from Alexandria, Va., who helped craft the statement, says it simply says that “we should be treating Muslims like any other partner in dialogue.”

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder received a standing ovation before he started speaking on Monday morning.
“This is definitely my kind of audience,” he said in response.
The main theme of Holder's 15-minute talk was that the conflict between fighting terrorism and protecting “our tradition of civil liberties” is not a “zero-sum battle.” Such an idea is not only “misguided,” he said, but “has done us more harm than good.”
After the speech Holder held an hourlong, off-the-record meeting with about a dozen top JCPA leaders on legal topics from torture to church-state issues.
"It was a deep, substantive discussion," said JCPA Washington director Hadar Susskind, adding that the attorney general saw the meeting as the "first step in building an open and engaged relationship with the Jewish community."How big a tent?The Jewish Council for Public Affairs Plenum's Sunday discussion of "How Big a Tent for Pro-Israel Advocacy?" marked the debut of a new face inside the tent.
J Street, the 10-month-old group that has marketed itself as an alternative to what it believes are the more hawkish views of mainstream Jewish organizations, for the first time was invited to participate in a conference held by an established group.The invitation sparked a spirited but civi, debate about how the Jewish community should discuss Israel.
Jeremy Ben-Ami, J Street's executive director, argued that the community should shun useless labels such as "pro-Israel" and instead have a vibrant discussion about what is best for the Jewish state -- saying that "orthodoxy" of opinion on Israel was "dangerous" and "sowing the seeds of destruction" for the Jewish community.
The deputy national director of the Anti-Defamation League, Kenneth Jacobson, responded that there was plenty of debate about Israel in the American Jewish community, but it happened in places such as the JCPA plenum and the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations.
The community has thought about the best way to be effective and have influence, Jacobson said, and the answer was to have a "consensus position" when it goes to Congress -- an approach that has achieved “unbelievable success.”
There's a "difference between the right to think as an individual and the responsibility of the community to present advocacy in a way that will have an impact,” the ADL official said.
Meanwhile, the third member of the panel, Endowment for Middle East Truth founder and director Sarah Stern, asserted that there was a "tremendous distinction between lobbying from the left and right” because those on the left were “encouraging risks.” Jacobson rejected that notion.
Stern and Jacobson argued that those who want to participate in the community's debate about the Jewish state should at least be grounded in some minimal amount of education about Israel and the Jewish world.
Ben-Ami, though, said the community can only benefit from bringing more people into the discussion, saying that young Jews are turned off when they are given just one opinion on the conflict but will be engaged by more free-flowing debate.
The crowd of about 75 seemed to include supporters of both viewpoints, and Ben-Ami was pleased afterward by the debate his appearance had fostered.
"This is the kind of discussion we need to have," he said. "If college students saw this, they'd be thrilled."

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Libyan President Muammar Gadhafi said Israel is to blame for the crisis in Darfur.
Gadhafi, president of the African Union, said Tuesday that "foreign forces," including Israel, are to blame for the genocide in the Sudan region.
"We discovered that some of the main leaders of the Darfur rebels have opened offices in Tel Aviv and hold meetings with the military there to add fuel to the conflict fire," the Libyan state news agency Jana quoted Gadhafi as saying, Ha'aretz reported.

The Pope told Jewish leaders visiting the Vatican that it was unacceptable for anyone, but especially a priest, to deny the Holocaust and the suffering of the Jews during the Second World War.
Benedict repeated a prayer recited by John Paul II in Jerusalem in March 2000, in which his predecessor had asked for "forgiveness" for the past persecution of Jews by Christians.
Pope Benedict said: "I now make his prayer my own."
He also confirmed that he will visit Israel in May, probably from the 8th to 13th of the month – his first trip to the Holy Land as Pontiff.
The Pope's meeting with about 60 American Jewish leaders at the Vatican was an attempt to rebuild bridges with Jews worldwide after he lifted the excommunication of a maverick British bishop, Richard Williamson, who denies the scale of the Holocaust and has questioned the use of gas chambers as the Nazi method of killing.
The Cambridge-educated bishop insisted in a television interview broadcast last month that the Nazis killed 200,000 to 300,000 Jews, rather than the six million accepted by historians, and that none of them were gassed.
Benedict said the Roman Catholic Church was "profoundly and irrevocably committed to reject all anti-semitism".
"The hatred and contempt for men, women and children that was manifested in the Shoah [the Hebrew term for the Holocaust] was a crime against God and against humanity," he told delegates from the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organisations.
"This should be clear to everyone, especially to those standing in the tradition of the Holy Scriptures."
Some Jewish leaders called for the Pope to go further and repeal Bishop Williamson's excommunication, but he made no specific mention of the British cleric.
Jewish groups and moderate Catholics were outraged when the Vatican lifted the excommunication in January, just days after Bishop Williamson's interview was broadcast on Swedish television.
Bishop Williamson, 67, later apologised for the trouble he had caused the Pope, but defied Benedict's demand that he recant his views, saying only that he would "re-examine" the historical evidence.
On Monday he was sacked as director of the seminary he ran in La Reja, Argentina, by the ultraconservative Society of St Pius X, a breakaway Catholic faction of which he is a member.
Senior cardinals insisted the Pope was unaware that Bishop Williamson was a Holocaust denier, but critics said a simple Google search would have revealed his controversial views.

Johannesburg - South Africa’s deputy foreign minister has been taken before the national human rights body for allegedly saying that "Jewish money" controls the United States, officials said Thursday.
Fatima Hajaig allegedly told a political rally two weeks ago in Johannesburg that Jews "control America, no matter which government comes into power, whether Republican or Democratic, whether Barack Obama or George Bush."
"Their control of America, just like the control of most western countries, is in the hands of Jewish money," she allegedly said.
Outraged by the remarks, the South African Jewish Board of Deputies — a civil rights group — said it filed a complaint Wednesday against Hajaig at the human rights commission.
"We submitted yesterday our formal complaint on the minister’s outrageous statement to the South African Human Rights Commission," the head of the group, Zev Krengel, told AFP.
"That minister’s statement is incorrect, inflammatory and outrageous. We feel in our young democracy and in the 21st century, we should learn to respect each other and refrain from such anti-Semitic statements," Krengel said.
The rights commission’s spokesman Vincent Moaga confirmed that the body had received the complaint, but could not give a timeline for processing it.
Foreign affairs spokesman Ronnie Mamoepa declined to give details on the case, but told AFP that the South African government "has committed itself to fighting against all forms of racism, in all their ramifications, including anti-Semitism."

Only days into his presidency, the USPresident Barack Obama, might get around to penning a letter to the leaders of East Africa, understandably so seeing as he has family in Kenya.This is how the letter might read without his usual eloquence and turn of phrase, which were edited out so his letter could fit in my allotted space (but really, because I couldn't match him word-for-word even if I wanted to).
Dear Sirs,
Thank you for your support during my campaign and the kind words of encouragement and counsel in the last few weeks.Kenya is the home of my father and I am not averse to being called a Kenyan- American and by extension an East African-American, it is with this background that I write to you gentlemen.Gentlemen, we stand on the cusp of history.Our region is a much more peaceful place than it was 20, 10 or even five years ago, but unrepaired hearts continue to simmer under the surface.
This has allowed the region to begin to harness the minds of its sons and daughters to drive progress and yet poverty continues to dog our every step. We are only just beginning to appreciate the true potential under our soils but our efforts to exploit these may be scuttled by greedy bureaucrats and corrupt businessmen.Gentlemen, we need to reassess our ambitions and reposition our legacy.
I write to you in salute of your efforts at East African Cooperation and also to lend my hand in furthering this cause that will bring us together as brothers and do away with the artificial boundaries that have no basis in culture or logic.Beyond sentimentality, the reestablishment of the East African Community is our best hope of maintaining our relevance in a world that is moving and changing fast, leaving the weak nations behind and enriching the people of organised, determined and focused nations.We need to inject a sense of urgency into forging our people together as one common market with no barriers to the movement of labour, capital or ownership of property and land.I have at least four years, at most eight, in office, I have inherited an economy on its knees and a country groping to regain its preeminence in world affairs, but even with these limitations America can still do good for East Africa.American capital can help extend your infrastructure – road, railway, power and communication networks, the key ingredients necessary to meld a people into one, to set the engines of commerce in motion and bring wealth and prosperity to our people.American science and technology can help in boosting your agriculture, improving the health of our people and widening the scope of your education system, because after all what is a nation without its people.Given an unfettered market the size of which you aspire to, American entrepreneurship can fire up your manufacturing sector and power up your service industries creating hundreds, thousands even hundreds of thousands of jobs for our people.Gentlemen the lifting up of our people out of the desperation of poverty and ignorance should be our ultimate goal. That is what will ensure that our legacy will endure beyond our children and our children's children.But gentlemen this dream can only come about through clean and accountable government.Without clean governments the costs of doing business will rise and make East Africa unattractive for commerce and trade.Whereas America, through its various agencies may send money to your countries, it is harnessing the power of corporate America that will have a more lasting and sustainable impact on our people.The curve of history has not been kind to our region. The sickest irony amidst the euphoria of the inauguration of America’s first black President is that one of Obama’s very first actions in office will be to ensure that millions more black babies are aborted in third world countries, with American taxpayers picking up the tab.
President Obama’s first act of “change” will be to issue an executive order that will lift a ban on using taxpayer money to fund international “family planning” groups who counsel women and perform abortions around the world, but mainly in Africa.
Fresh from his complete disregard of Israel’s barbarian bombardment of Gaza, an onslaught that has killed around 400 children, Obama will ensure that potentially millions more never even get the chance of life in the first place.
Obama will reverse the so-called Mexico City policy, the federal rule prohibiting aid to family planning groups which was instituted by Ronald Reagan in 1984. The policy does not apply to abortions carried out in cases of rape, incest, or life-threatening conditions. Obama’s executive order will pass almost exactly 36 years to the day since the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision which legalized abortion.
Abortion groups that will enjoy a fresh injection of American taxpayers’ money will include the Family Guidance Association of Ethiopia and the Planned Parenthood Association of Zambia.
The executive order will also precede a likely decison by Obama to once again release funds for the UNFPA, a United Nations organization that supports China’s policy of forced abortion.
“Obama’s repeal of the abortion aid policy is one of several executive actions that he will take soon after his inauguration today, according to several Obama transition aides. He is also considering lifting Bush administration restrictions on federally funded stem cell research,” reports the Hartford Courant.
Stem cell research has attracted vociferous opposition from anti-abortion groups because many of the treatments in the field use cells from aborted babies. The Catholic Church in Scotland this week called the procedure “immoral and unethical,” especially in light of the fact that stem cells from adult donations can be used instead.
Federally funded global abortions as a method of population control has been an obsession of elites and eugenicists throughout history.
One of the pioneers of family planning and the woman who opened the first birth control clinic in Britain, Marie Stopes, was a racist and an anti-Semite who campaigned for selective breeding to achieve racial purity, a passion she shared with Adolf Hitler in adoring letters and poems that she sent the leader of the Third Reich.
The feminist also attended the Nazi congress on population science in Berlin in 1935, while calling for the “compulsory sterilisation of the diseased, drunkards, or simply those of bad character.” Stopes acted on her appalling theories by concentrating her abortion clinics in poor areas so as to reduce the birth rate of the lower classes.
Stopes left most of her estate to the Eugenics Society, an organization that shared her passion for racial purity and still exists today under the new name The Galton Institute. The society has included members such as Charles Galton Darwin (grandson of the evolutionist) , Julian Huxley and Margaret Sanger.
Ominously, The Galton Institute website promotes its support and funding initiative for “the practical delivery of family planning facilities, especially in developing countries.” In other words, the same organization that once advocated sterilizing black people to achieve racial purity in the same vein as the Nazis is now bankrolling abortions of black babies in the third world.
With Obama’s executive order to release taxpayer money to fund abortions of black babies in Africa, he is signaling his firm intention to act in the interests of the ancestors of the Hitlerian eugenicist movement who now control the family planning groups.
A lot has been made of the ideals of Martin Luther King in light of the inauguration of the first black President. What would the legendary civil rights campaigner have thought of Obama’s action to ensure funding for the abortion of black babies? Here’s what his niece, Dr. Alveda King had to say about the matter at a conference last August.
“The great irony,” she said, “is that abortion has done what the Klan only dreamed of.”
King stated that the killing of a quarter of the black population of the US has not been from the lynch mobs of her childhood days, but from abortionists, “who plant their killing centers in minority neighborhoods and prey upon women who think they have no hope.”
Obama’s first action as President will ensure that those “killing centers” across the world will now be empowered with fresh capital to abort more black babies while the new President grandstands as a messiah for the poor and oppressed black race.
